The History
The company was founded by electrical engineers William Reddington Hewlett and David Packard in a small garage in Palo Alto, California. One of the first major decisions the pair had to make was whether to call the company Hewlett-Packard or Packard-Hewlett. This, they settled by tossing a coin.

The company started out as a manufacturer of electronic test equipment. Their first lucrative product was the HP200A, a precision audio oscillator which was patronized by Walt Disney Productions, among others. Later on, during World War II, the company also worked on counter-radar technology and artillery shell fuses.

The company entered the computer industry in 1966 with a series of minicomputers. In 1968, it introduced the HP computer 9100A, widely known as the very first electronic device to be called a personal computer. In the 1970s, the company started making an even bigger name with a series of firsts - the first handheld scientific electronic calculator, the first handheld programmable, the first symbolic and graphing calculator, among others.

In the 1980s, the company started to market HP printers and printer cartridges, as well as scanners. These products eventually developed into single multifunctional products that incorporated printing, scanning, copying and fax functions, making them extremely popular in workplaces. In the 1990s, the company also grew from catering specifically to businesses, to reach out to regular consumers as well.
